The avenue for transformation that I know is through yoga, but it need not necessarily be that for you. The yoga I’m writing about isn’t the typical class at some gym or studio. Yoga is an ancient philosophy that explores the process of inner transformation. At its heart, yoga practice is about devotion to ourselves. Practical yoga philosophy incorporates self-reflection and self-observation to determine the underlying motivations for our actions, habits, and patterns, and then asking ourselves if those motivations align with what we feel and know to be what is truly good for ourselves and the world. And, when they are not, relinquishing them so that a deeper authenticity can rise up from our cores for us to live by. It is a process of self-healing, self-discovery, and self-transformation. It is a path that is most effective, at least in the beginning, with an external guide and mentor. Yoga provides an approach for developing the whole being of a person: physical, physiological, habitual, identity, and emotion. It does this through regular physical movement and breathing practices, tailored meditation practices, and guidance on addressing the everyday trials we face with advice and ethics that’ve been developing for thousands of years.
